Recommended Documentaries/Videos

Here is a working list of some thought-provoking documentaries that I have seen. Enjoy!

  • American Circumcision – A well-rounded documentary that explores the history of circumcision, the history of nonconsensual infant circumcision in America, and the actual effects the procedure has on the bodies and experiences of the people affected. Trigger warning for images of circumcision. It may bring up intense feelings for people who have been circumcised. (The end is a bit cringe-worthy, calling this “the last stand of American civil rights”…otherwise this is a very informative doc).

  • Orgasm, Inc – A documentary about the myth of “female sexual dysfunction” and how the pharmaceutical industry is taking advantage of women.

  • How to Survive a Plague – An incredibly moving documentary about the work and struggles of the AIDS activist coalitions ACT UP and TAG during the AIDS crisis in the 80s and 90s.

  • Poverty, Inc. – A documentary explores the history, paternalism, and problems within the global charity industry.

  • Pediatrician Dr. Nadine Burke Harris in her TEDMED talk “How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across a Lifetime” – Explains the biological and psychological effects of “childhood adverse experiences” (including corporal punishment). Available on YouTube.

  • The Business of Being Born –  A documentary about the medicalization of childbirth. This film follows multiple couples and a midwife while she is attending home births.
